How To Save Money On Your Next Move

Moving into a new home is an exciting time, but it can also be an expensive one.  Whether relocating across the country, or just down the street, many costs will factor into your moving budget.  As one of the top title companies in the DC Metro area for 2022 (as recently announced by the Washington Business Journal!), Champion Title has a list of ways you can keep moving costs down.

Make your move in the fall/winter.  There are multiple benefits to moving during an off-peak time frame.  Real estate’s busiest seasons are spring and summer, so cost of movers and difficulty scheduling both increase during this window.  Moving during the off-season months of October through March will save you money and the frustration of trying to find a time that works with your closing date.  Aim for weekdays and middle of the month to reap the most benefit.

Pre-sort and declutter your possessions.  Less items to move means less boxes to move!  Take advantage of this opportunity to sort and discard possessions you no longer need.  Selling and donating these items will save you on moving costs and give you a fresher start in your new home.  You can even use proceeds from garage sales etc. to cover additional costs of your move.

Use up the items in your refrigerator.  When decluttering your possessions, don’t forget the fridge.  As you prepare for your move, make sure to use up the food in your refrigerator and freezer as these items don’t survive the transition very well.  Plus, this will decrease the amount of boxes you need.  You can donate any food you don’t consume to local charities.

Collect your own moving boxes.  A great way to lower moving costs is by being resourceful with moving materials.  Before purchasing moving boxes and packing paper, start saving boxes from shipments you have received.  Check grocery stores, your workplace, and neighbors to see if they have any boxes they are discarding that you can use.  Plus, linens and towels make great packing material!

Consider moving yourself.  If you can, skip the moving company altogether.  This will be the most practical if not moving very far from your current home.  It will probably take more time, but packing and transporting your belongings yourself can save you a lot of money on movers.  Rent your own moving vehicle and take as many trips as you need to transfer everything to your new residence.  Don’t be shy asking friends and family for assistance as this option is more labor intensive.  Include an incentive such as dinner and refreshments!
